Back in the early 1960s, a television commercial for a topical skin ointment first coined the phrase “the heartbreak of psoriasis,” referring to the emotional and physical distress the disease can inflict. Since then, the phrase has become a widespread cliché — yet one that still rings true for over 7.5 million sufferers in the U.S.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system becomes overactive, causing inflammation inside the body that results in skin cells building up rapidly on the surface of the skin to form thick, silvery, red scales, and itchy, dry patches. With cutting-edge technology and innovative techniques, the office of Advanced Dermatology can effectively address some of your most problematic skin and complexion issues.

The most common areas affected by psoriasis are the knees, elbows, and scalp, but it can also affect the torso, palms, and soles of the feet. And while its exact cause is unknown, researchers believe environmental triggers play a key role. Certain conditions, even minor ones, can cause an outbreak of psoriasis including stress, skin cuts, bug bites, infections, and even certain medications.

Treatments are highly customized, because what works for one person may not work for another. For mild to moderate cases, prescription drugs and topical ointments are used, and in some cases, a procedure called phototherapy is employed, which involves exposing skin to ultraviolet light on a regular basis.

Committed to healthy, beautiful skin

At the office of Advanced Dermatology, we employ the most advanced techniques to treat a variety of skin conditions with the goal of giving you healthier, younger looking skin. You can count on our expertise and high level of compassionate care we offer to help you look and feel your best. For more information on our office and the many services that we provide, give us a call today.

You thought those red blotches and breakouts on your face was a sign of acne. You thought your acne would fade in time, but it didn’t. Chances are, you don’t have acne but a skin condition called rosacea, is a common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in your face. It may also produce small, red, pus-filled bumps.

The first step to finding an effective treatment is getting an accurate diagnosis. If you’re unsure if those red bumps on your face are acne, rosacea, or a little of both, count on us to give you the help you need. At the office of Advanced Dermatology we’ve got the cutting-edge technology and innovative techniques that effectively address some of your most problematic skin and complexion issues.

Acne and rosacea are similar in that they both stem from a problem with your pores and both conditions can cause tiny pimples, pustules or cysts. While acne can occur anywhere on the face, neck, back, upper arms, and shoulders, rosacea is confined to the center of the face (cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead). Acne is common in the teen years, but rosacea typically doesn’t appear before age 30.

Similar symptoms, different triggers

For the most part, rosacea is triggered externally and acne is triggered internally. Rosacea triggers can include factors like sunlight, heat, cold, stress, alcohol, hot beverages, and spicy foods. Acne is usually triggered by hormonal fluctuations, which is why it often occurs during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.

Treatment for both focuses on controlling signs and symptoms. A combination of good skin care and prescription topical creams or gels can help reduce redness. For moderate or severe cases, antibiotics may be prescribed. Laser therapy treatments can also be used to reduce redness.

Committed to healthy, beautiful skin

If you suffer from troublesome acne or rosacea, the office of Advanced Dermatology can help you get the right care. You can count on our expertise and high level of compassionate care to help you look and feel your best. For more information on our office and the many services that we provide, give us a call today.

Did you know that skin cancer is the most common type of cancer? While skin cancer is often caused by exposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun, it can also occur in areas that do not receive direct sunlight. As the number one cancer in the United States, it makes good sense to have annual skin cancer screenings by a qualified dermatologist. At the office of Advanced Dermatology, we provide skilled and experienced care to help prevent, detect, and treat skin cancer as well as a broad range of conditions affecting the skin, hair, and nails.

If a skin cancer screening indicates the presence of pre-cancerous or cancerous cells, our office will advise you on the best options in care to biopsy, remove, and treat the lesion so that no further tissue damage occurs as well as to help prevent any additional consequences to both your health and overall well being. One of the most effective treatments for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas as well as early melanomas is Mohs surgery. As one of the go to procedures in skin cancer care, only the affected layers of skin are removed. And, not only does Mohs surgery have a high cure rate, but it also allows you to keep as much healthy skin as possible since only the skin with cancer cells is removed. With a high rate of success, a Mohs surgery can often be performed in a medical office or surgical suite.

As a general rule, it’s a good idea for everyone to perform periodic self-exams to check for signs of any suspicious skin spots, changes, or lesions that may be indicative of a problem and contact our office if any of these issues are detected. Remember to be especially mindful of the appearance of any new moles or changes to existing moles. However, in addition to self-checks, annual skin cancer screenings as performed by a dermatologist are absolutely essential in order to completely and thoroughly assess the entire body for any signs of suspicious pre-cancerous or cancerous lesions.

At the office of Advanced Dermatology, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of skilled and compassionate care. For more information on our practice and the many services we provide, give our office a call today.

If you’re concerned about your complexion, at the office of Advanced Dermatology, we can provide you with a thorough skin analysis and are trained in cutting-edge solutions such as laser treatments, which can make a big difference for your skin.

As we age, the skin changes, and you may start notice spots or discoloration or scars you do not like. Laser treatments are a great way to minimize the appearance of acne scarring, redness, wrinkles, discoloration, spots, stretch marks, and other types of skin imperfections. Laser treatments can even work to remove an unwanted tattoo.

The treatment works by using a series of light wavelengths on the affected area that are absorbed by the skin. Depending on the area you are targeting, your doctor will determine the type of laser to use and how many sessions you may need. Typically, you will need a series of sessions, spaced out over time to eradicate the issue.

This is a great solution for these types of skin issues. However, it’s always important to get a full body check and have any area in question looked at carefully by your doctor prior to undergoing laser treatment. This way your doctor can assess if there’s a more serious issue and make sure there is no need to conduct a biopsy.

While the treatments are associated with some pain as the laser is being used, we think you’ll find that the lasting the results are well worth the experience. We always take care to make you as comfortable as we can before and after treatments—numbing cream and ice can help.

For optimal results, we recommend limiting time in the sun and always using sunscreen, quitting smoking, avoiding certain skin care products, which we will discuss with you at the consultation.

Instead of stressing about your skin every time you look in the mirror, schedule a consultation to discuss the laser treatment options and what to expect for your complexion.

At the office of Advanced Dermatology, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of skilled and compassionate care. For more information on our office and the many services that we provide, give us a call today.

If you’re upset about the appearance of acne scars every time you look in the mirror, at the office of Advanced Dermatology, we can help!

There are a number of different safe and effective treatment options for acne scars. By analyzing your skin and type of scarring, we can determine what may be best for you.

Common Treatments for Acne Scarring

Some of the most common treatments include:

Laser treatments. This consists of a series of sessions where a special light is used to target the troubled area.

Minor skin surgeries. This type of minor surgical procedure involves excising the scar and may require a few stitches.

Chemical peels. This involves the use of an acid peel that removes the top layer of skin.

These are often best for deep scars since the fillers add layers to the skin and can cover this type of scarring.

This involves the use of a tool that resurfaces or removes the top layer of the skin to reduce the appearance of a deep scar.

Sometimes injections of Botox around the scarred area can help improve the appearance of the skin.

The type of treatment we recommend will depend on the depth and severity of the scarring and your skin composition. Before undergoing any treatment to reduce or remove acne scarring, it’s important that your skin is clear and acne-free. We can work with you to suggest a skin care regimen to help clear up any acne and continue with post treatments to ensure the health and clean look of your skin.

Remember, there is no one-size-fits all solution. Your complexion is unique and something that works well for one person may not be the best option for you. Your doctor will determine the best plan for you and explain what to expect with the treatment options. Sometimes one or more treatment may be suggested, or your doctor may even suggest a combination of different treatment options.

The good news is that there are a number of options that work well. Let us help you reduce acne scarring and like what you see in the mirror!

At the office of Advanced Dermatology, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of skilled and compassionate care. For more information on our office and the many services that we provide, give us a call today.

At the office of Advanced Dermatology, we provide skilled and experienced care to treat a wide range of conditions affecting the skin, hair, and nails as well as to help patients enjoy the benefits of a more radiant and youthful complexion. With Botox® treatments, we can address the unwanted signs of aging to safely and effectively reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox is a neurotoxin that comes from the Clostridium botulinum organism found in nature that when injected in controlled and strategically placed dosages works to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying muscles. Delivered to targeted areas via a series of small injections with micro-fine needles, no anesthesia is required and the entire treatment takes approximately 10 minutes. With this non-invasive method of care, discomfort is minimal. In fact, most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite. Best of all, the procedure involves zero downtime with most people returning to work or their daily activities immediately after the appointment.

With Botox, you’ll typically see a noticeable reduction in fine lines and wrinkles in 4-10 days following treatment any enjoy improvements lasting up to four to six months. And, by coming in for periodic treatment, you can easily maintain the aesthetically pleasing effects of Botox over time.

As one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the United States today, more than six million treatments are performed annually. Botox may also be useful for migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and eye and neck muscle spasms. As skilled providers of care, we offer an array of cosmetic procedures to address the unwanted signs of aging to restore a more vibrant and flawless complexion.

At the office of Advanced Dermatology, we’re dedicated to providing the highest quality of skilled and compassionate care. For more information on our practice and the many services we provide, give our office a call today.

Hair may have been all the rage back in the 1960s, but these days women – and men—are going to great lengths to get rid of it. Options abound, from shaving to waxing to tweezing. But for the most long-lasting and effective results, laser hair removal is the way to go.

At Advanced Dermatology, our trained professionals are not only experts in laser hair removal, but they are sensitive to their clients’ needs. We understand how having excess hair can make a person feel self-conscious and embarrassed in a variety of situations. Count on us to treat your problem in a gentle and discreet manner.

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive technique that uses highly concentrated light to penetrate hair follicles. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft follicle and damages it to inhibit future hair growth. The procedure is relatively painless, with some mild discomfort that lasts a few seconds. Because hair grows in cycles, it typically takes three to four treatments to provide significant hair reduction, followed by periodic maintenance treatments as needed.

While the process works on most people, there are certain considerations for people with darker skin, where a less intensive laser is used to avoid damaging the outer skin. Our lasers can do laser hair removal even if the skin is tanned, there is no need to wait for after the summer or after the tan fades. Those with white or gray hair may not have enough hair pigment to be a candidate for laser hair removal.

It’s natural to feel some anxiety, whether it’s excitement for your anticipated new look or some pre-treatment stress. Don’t be shy about discussing these feelings with us. We will listen to what you have to say and reassure you every step of the way. At Advanced Dermatology, our goal is to help you get the look you always wanted. For more information about laser hair removal and all of the services we offer, give us a call today.

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition of the skin. It starts to flare when your immune system takes aim against your own body. Skin cells start to grow too quickly, causing skin lesions and red, scaly plaque that shows up most frequently on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back.

When you are looking for highly trained and experienced dermatologists to treat your psoriasis, count on the experts at Advanced Dermatology. From the moment you step into our offices, you’ll realize that you have come to the right place. From our reception area to our exam rooms, our practice is made up of professionals who take your dermatological health very seriously.

Though there’s no cure for psoriasis, there are ways to quell one of its more annoying symptoms, which is itching. Here are some tips to help stem the scratching tide.

Remove the scale. Less scale often leads to less itchiness. It can also improve the effectiveness of products that are made to relieve that annoying tingle. To do away with scale, use a medication such as salicylic acid. It works to soften the scale so it can be gently brushed away. Don’t pull off the scale, because it will worsen the condition.

Limit bathing time. Spend less than five minutes in the shower and 15 minutes in a bath. Too much of this kind of exposure can remove moisture, which can increase your desire to scratch. And while you’re at it, keep the water temperatures moderate. You may be longing for a “nice hot” shower or bath, but know that the heat will only inflame your skin.

Be liberal with skin moisturizers. Rub on a moisturizing cream or ointment following each shower, bath and hand-washing session. It helps seal in the moisture your skin craves, reduces the redness and promotes healing. Gently apply those moisturizers while resisting your hankering to scratch.

Try itch-relieving medications, many of which can be bought over the counter. The ones with menthol or camphor are likely to work best.

Employ a cold compress. Putting something chilly on the itchy sites staunches the activity of the nerves that shoot the itch signals to your brain.

The office of Advanced Dermatology offers only the highest quality care. We use the most sophisticated equipment and cutting-edge technology while upholding the strictest sterilization techniques. Please contact us today to schedule an appointment!

Gardening, going for walks in the woods and camping trips are the kinds of family activities we treasure. But enjoying the great outdoors can also mean a brush with those three-leaf nuisances: Poison ivy, oak and sumac.

If you’ve got questions about how to protect your family from these toxic invasives or what to do about the itchy, uncomfortable rashes they leave behind, the dermatologists at Advanced Dermatology have the expertise to keep a mild case from turning into something serious.

These weedy plants are disturbingly common. Poison ivy, oak and sumac can be found in many parts of the United States. All three produce a shiny, waxy substance called urushiol that triggers a reaction when it touches your skin. Even your pets can bring it home: Urushiol sticks to just about anything, including fur.

Symptoms can start between a few hours and a few days after exposure. First comes a pesky itch, followed by an ugly red rash, and eventually those nasty blisters, which can become infected if not treated properly.

If you think you can only be affected by these poisonous plants in the spring and summer, think again. Coming in contact with any parts including the roots can cause a rash — even in winter. Airborne particles from burning the plants can trigger a reaction if they land on our skin and can lead to a serious — possibly life-threatening — reaction if inhaled. In some cases an allergic reaction to urushiol can cause difficulty breathing or swallowing, fever and swelling on your face or around your eyes.

If you’re concerned about these poisonous invaders, call Advanced Dermatology, where we’re experts on many varieties of skin conditions and have the newest medications available to treat them. Don’t let poison ivy, oak or sumac take the enjoyment out of your outdoor plans.

When people think about the organs of their bodies, their hearts, lungs and kidneys usually come to mind. But did you know that that it’s your biggest organ? This astoundingly versatile and complicated organ can also develop problems. Psoriasis is one of them. This common disease is chronic and genetic. It’s typically cyclical wherein it will be active for a few weeks or months and then subside. Courses of treatment include oral medication, topical creams and light therapy.

While there are several versions of psoriasis, the vast majority of it is the plaque type. It presents as patches that are red and covered with thick, silvery scales in a variety of sizes. The sizes can range from a few spots of dandruff-like scaling to widespread major outbreaks.

Psoriasis is common on the arms, legs and/or torso, but it can show up in other locations of the skin. The patches are often dry, cracked, sore and itchy. Scratching them makes them thicker.

About half of the people with plaque psoriasis also have it in their fingernails. It shows up as tiny dents, crumbling, discoloration that’s white, brown or yellow, and a buildup of skin cells under the nails that causes one or more of the nails to rise to the point of detachment.

Inverse psoriasis is another common variety of the disease. It occurs where skin touches skin, such as the genitals, armpits, the buttocks’ crease and under female breasts. Inverse psoriasis shows up as sore or painful patches that are smooth and red. There’s little, if any, silvery-white coating.
